Step by step, at the bench
Each page covers one procedure from start to finish and marks the step that decides the result. Equipment is linked only when the procedure needs it, never because a link earns. When the right answer depends on your material, your room or a limit set by the manufacturer, the page says so and sends you to the maker's instructions.
Getting started
The first hours with a new printer, laser or soldering station: unboxing, calibration, a first job, and the settings to leave alone until then.

Choosing a machine
Filament or resin, diode or CO2, cutter or press: which kind of machine a project needs, and which published figures separate two candidates.
- Diode or CO2: choosing a laser by the materials you will use The two kinds of hobby laser are sold side by side, and their wattages look comparable when they are not. The better way to choose is to start from the materials, then read the figures each maker publishes for them.
- A first vinyl cutter: reading cutting force, width and software terms Vinyl cutters look alike in photographs and differ in the figures that decide what they can cut and how freely their software can be used. Reading those figures in order narrows the choice quickly.
Materials
Filaments, resins, sheet materials, vinyls and blanks, and the settings and storage their makers publish for each one.
- Filament that prints well: storing and drying it properly Most filaments absorb moisture from the air, and a spool that printed cleanly in spring can string and bubble by autumn. Storage and drying are cheaper than any other fix for that problem, and both follow what the filament maker publishes.
- Sheet materials for a laser: plywood, acrylic and what to check first Laser results depend on the sheet as much as on the machine. The glue in plywood, the flatness of a board and whether acrylic is cast or extruded decide how cleanly a job cuts, and all of them are stated by careful suppliers.
Workshop setup
Space, power, ventilation and extraction for machines that heat, burn and cure, following what each maker publishes about installation.
- A room for laser and resin: space, power and air Lasers and resin printers are the two hobby machines whose surroundings matter as much as the machine. Planning the space before delivery avoids the most common mistake: a machine installed where its fumes have nowhere to go.

Finishing
Supports, sanding, washing and curing, weeding and pressing: the steps that turn a finished job into an object worth keeping.
- From print to finished part: supports, sanding and priming A print straight off the machine is rarely a finished object. Removing supports well and sanding in the right order turn it into one, and neither step needs expensive tools.
- Laser-cut wood: removing scorch, sanding and sealing Laser-cut wood comes off the bed with dark edges and a smoky film around cuts. A few steps before and after cutting turn those parts into finished pieces.
Buying
How to spread a budget between the machine and what it needs to run, and which upgrade can wait until the first one has been learned.
- A first maker budget: where the money should go first The machine price is only part of what a first printer or laser costs. A budget that leaves room for consumables, safety equipment and the first spare parts is spent better than one that goes entirely on the most capable machine.
