A heat press clamps a transfer against a garment, a tote, a coaster or a tile at a set temperature, pressure and time, and the result depends on all three arriving evenly. The platen size is the declared heated area, and it decides the largest print that goes on in one pass. The opening style divides the shelf: a clamshell hinges open like a book and is compact, a swing-away moves the heated plate aside so nothing hot hangs over the hands, and a drawer slides the lower plate out. Temperature is published as a range with a control that is digital or a dial, and what the listing rarely prints is how evenly that heat spreads — the corners of a large platen are where a transfer fails first. Pressure is set by a knob or a lever with a scale or without one, and a scale is what makes a result repeatable. A timer with an alarm, sometimes an automatic release, keeps the time honest. Attachments — cap platens, mug elements, plate heaters — turn one press into several and are usually bought separately.
