The best magnifier lamps for 2026

A magnifier lamp puts a lens and a ring of light over a workbench, for soldering, painting miniatures or sorting small parts, and its two main figures pull against each other. Dioptre strength describes the lens power, and the magnification a maker prints beside it depends on a convention for the viewing distance — the dioptre figure is the more comparable of the two. A stronger lens usually means a smaller lens diameter and a shorter working distance, so a lens powerful enough for surface-mount parts may leave too little room for an iron underneath. Lens material is glass or acrylic, and glass resists scratches from tools. Light output is published in lumens or lux at a distance where the maker is careful, and colour temperature in kelvin decides whether wire colours and paint read true. The arm is described by its reach and its joints, and a spring arm that drifts down is the complaint that follows these lamps. Mounting is a desk clamp, a weighted base or a floor stand. Then dimming, a lens cover that stops sunlight focusing through the lens onto the bench, and whether the light head can be replaced. We compare dioptre strength, lens diameter and material, light output and colour temperature, arm reach, mounting and dimming.
