What the standard defines
Nothing published. 1.75 mm is the nominal diameter the majority of desktop printers and filaments are made for, and 2.85 mm the other common size. Printer makers design extruders and hotends around one of them; filament makers state the diameter and, on careful labels, a tolerance around it.
What it does not promise
No tolerance by default: the nominal figure says nothing about how consistent a spool is. No roundness: an oval filament can meet a nominal diameter and feed poorly. No material or temperature compatibility. No spool dimensions, which decide whether a spool fits a holder or feeder.
What it works with
The extruder and hotend of the printer, built for one diameter. The slicer’s filament diameter setting, which must match. Spool width and hub size, which printer holders and automatic material systems publish.
Questions makers ask before buying
What does a diameter tolerance mean?
The range around the nominal diameter the maker states the filament stays within. A tighter tolerance gives more even extrusion.
Is 2.85 mm filament the same as 3 mm?
Filament sold for 3 mm printers is commonly made at 2.85 mm. Makers of printers in that size state which filament they take.
