The best speciality filaments for 2026

Speciality filaments add something to a base plastic — carbon or glass fibre for stiffness, wood or metal powder for looks, glow pigment, or a polymer such as nylon or polycarbonate for strength. The base polymer is what decides how the filament prints, and a "carbon fibre" spool can be PLA, PETG or nylon underneath; the listing should say which. The filler type and, on careful listings, its proportion describe what was added. The nozzle requirement is the part most often missed: abrasive fillers — fibres, metal, glow pigments — wear a brass nozzle quickly, and a hardened steel or ruby-tipped nozzle is the maker's usual instruction. Recommended temperatures follow the base polymer, and engineering polymers need a hotend and enclosure that reach them. Drying advice matters most for nylon, which absorbs moisture fast. Net weight is often lower per spool on these filaments, so price comparisons need it. Then the finish — matte, metallic, wood-grain — which is usually why the spool was bought. We compare base polymer, filler, nozzle requirement, recommended temperatures, drying advice, net weight and finish.
