Why cleaning matters

Residue on a lens or protective window absorbs part of the beam, reducing the power that reaches the work. It can also heat and damage the optic. A sudden drop in cutting performance is often dirty optics.

Before cleaning

Switch off and unplug the laser, and let the head cool. Read the maker’s maintenance instructions: some modules have a removable protective window, others an exposed lens, and CO2 machines have mirrors as well as a focus lens.

Cleaning steps

Remove loose dust with gentle air rather than wiping. Clean the optic with the lens wipes or solution the maker names, using light pressure and a single direction. Let it dry fully before reassembling and switching on.

Keeping optics clean for longer

Air assist keeps smoke off the lens. Extraction that pulls smoke away from the head helps. Avoiding very smoky materials, or using lower power and more passes on them, reduces buildup.

When to replace

Scratches, pits or a coating that stays cloudy after cleaning mean the optic should be replaced with the maker’s part.

Can the protective window be replaced?

On many diode laser modules the window in front of the diode is a replaceable part, and makers sell spares. The manual describes how to remove it.
