The extruder grips the filament and pushes it into the hotend, and when it slips or chews the filament a print underextrudes. Printer fit covers the mount, the motor and the firmware changes a new extruder needs. The design divides the shelf: direct drive sits on the toolhead just above the hotend and controls flexible filaments well at the cost of carried weight, while a Bowden extruder sits on the frame and pushes through a tube, keeping the toolhead light. The gear ratio — a reduction between motor and drive gear — gives more push from a small motor and finer control. Dual drive gears grip the filament from both sides and slip less than a single gear against an idler. The filament path matters for TPU: a constrained path with no gaps is what lets soft filament through. Weight is published on direct-drive units because it affects ringing at speed. Steps per millimetre is the firmware figure the maker should publish. Then the tension adjustment and whether the gears can be reached for cleaning.
