Vector files such as SVG and DXF for cutting and line engraving, and raster images such as PNG or JPG for photo and fill engraving. The laser software converts them into machine moves; which formats a machine accepts depends on the software its maker supports.
Laser software works with two kinds of artwork, and each suits a different job.
Vector files for cutting and scoring
SVG and DXF files describe lines and shapes as paths. The laser follows those paths to cut or score. Design programs, CAD software and many online resources export them. A path must be closed for a cut piece to fall out cleanly.
Raster images for engraving
PNG, JPG and BMP images are grids of pixels. The laser scans back and forth, varying power or dot density to reproduce the image. Photo engraving uses them, and the software’s dithering options change the look.
What the laser software adds
The software assigns power, speed and passes to each layer or colour of the artwork, orders the operations and sends the job. Some machines use their maker’s own software; others work with third-party programs that support the controller.
Checking compatibility
The maker publishes which software supports the machine, and that decides the formats. A machine with open controller support accepts a wide range of software and files.
Practical habits
Keep the artwork and the settings separate: the same SVG can be cut on different machines, but each material and machine needs its own tested settings.
Questions makers ask before buying
Why can a laser not cut a JPG?
A JPG is a grid of pixels with no paths to follow. Cutting needs vector lines; software can trace an image into vectors, but the result needs checking.
Are laser files interchangeable between machines?
The artwork is; the power and speed settings are not. Settings saved for one laser and material rarely transfer directly to another machine.
