What does the laser class printed on an engraver mean?

What the class describes

The class groups laser products by the accessible radiation they can expose a person to in normal use, under the laser product safety standard. The maker declares the class and prints it on the product label.

Why the product matters more than the module

An open-frame machine exposes the beam area, so the product is classed by its module. An enclosed machine with interlocks that stop the laser when a lid opens, and a window that filters the laser’s wavelength, can be classed as a whole product with a lower class. Makers state which design gives which class.

What the class does not say

It does not describe cutting power, which follows optical output, focus and air assist. It does not describe fumes, which need extraction whatever the class. It does not replace the maker’s instructions on eye protection, especially with doors open or during alignment.

Does a lower class mean eye protection is not needed?

The maker’s instructions state when protection is required, including when doors are open or during maintenance. The class alone does not replace those instructions.
