Cut with the right blade depth and force so the vinyl is cut through but the carrier sheet is not, remove the large waste first, then lift small pieces with a fine hook while the design is well lit. A slightly warm sheet often releases more easily.
Weeding is slow on detailed designs, and most of the difficulty is decided at the cutting stage.
Get the cut right first
Run a test cut with the settings the vinyl maker or cutter maker recommends. The blade should cut through the vinyl and only mark the clear carrier sheet. A cut that is too shallow makes weeding a struggle; one that is too deep cuts the carrier and lets pieces shift.
Remove large waste first
Peel the outer waste away from the design slowly, at a low angle. Watch for small parts of the design lifting, and press them back down if they do.
Then the small pieces
Use a fine hook or pick to lift the insides of letters and small cut-outs. Good light, or a light pad under the sheet, makes cut lines easier to see. Weeding lines — extra cut lines around a design — break waste into smaller sections.
Material behaviour
Some vinyls weed more easily slightly warm, and glitter or flock vinyls are thicker and need different cutting settings. The vinyl maker’s published cutting and pressing settings are the starting point.
Before pressing
Check that the design is mirrored if the vinyl requires it, trim the carrier sheet close to the design, and follow the maker’s press temperature, time and peel instructions.

Why does the design lift with the waste?
Usually because the cut did not go fully through the vinyl, or the pieces are too small for the material. A test cut and a slower weeding angle help.
Should heat transfer vinyl be cut mirrored?
Yes, for most HTV, because the design is cut from the back and pressed face up. The vinyl maker’s instructions confirm it for each product.
