PLA’s layer lines can be made to disappear with patience and a few inexpensive materials.

Reduce lines at the printing stage

Thinner layers or variable layer height smooth curves. Orientation matters: surfaces facing up or parallel to the bed show fewer steps than steep slopes.

Sand in stages

Start with a coarser grit to remove supports marks and the worst steps, then move through finer grits. Wet sanding keeps the paper from clogging and avoids heating PLA, which softens with friction. Sand evenly to avoid flat spots on curves.

Fill with primer

A filler primer fills fine lines. Apply light coats, let them dry as the primer maker advises, and sand between coats. The primer shows which areas still need work.

Paint and finish

Once smooth, paint and seal according to the paint maker’s instructions. Ventilation and masks apply to sprays, as their labels state.
