The build volume is one of the most comparable figures on a printer listing, as long as it is read as a declaration rather than a guarantee.

What the figure is

Width, depth and height, in millimetres, as the maker declares them. This site copies them exactly as published, without rounding and without calculating a volume from them, because the three dimensions matter separately: a tall, narrow part and a flat, wide one need different machines.

What reduces the usable space

Bed clips or magnets that hold a plate may sit inside the printable area. Purge or wipe zones used when a printer changes colour take a strip of the bed. Brims and rafts added for adhesion extend beyond the part itself. Enclosures and cameras can limit height on some designs. A multicolour system may also reserve part of the bed for a purge tower.

Resin printers read differently

On a resin printer the build volume is set by the screen area and the height the platform can travel. The usable footprint is the screen, and parts are often printed at an angle with supports, which uses more height than the part’s own size suggests.

A practical margin

Plan the largest part a little smaller than the declared dimensions and check the slicer preview, which shows the exact space the printer profile allows. Where a part must be exactly the maximum size, the maker’s profile in the slicer is the authority, not the listing.

In pieces. Slicers can cut a model into sections that are printed separately and joined, which is how most large props and enclosures are made.

Does a larger build volume make a printer slower?

Not by itself, but a larger bed takes longer to heat and a larger moving mass can limit acceleration. The maker’s published speed and heat-up figures say more than the size alone.
