A laser suits engraving and cutting thin sheet quickly, with no tool touching the work; a CNC router carves depth, cuts thicker material and handles metals like aluminium, at the cost of noise, dust and tool changes. The projects decide more than the price does.
Both machines follow a file to shape flat material, and they do it by opposite means: one removes material with light, the other with a spinning cutter.
What a laser engraver does best
Engraving images and text into wood, leather, card and coated metal. Cutting thin sheet — plywood, acrylic, felt — with a narrow kerf and no tool wear. Speed on detail, because nothing has to touch the surface. It leaves a charred edge on wood and produces smoke that needs extraction.
What a desktop CNC router does best
Carving depth: pockets, reliefs, signs with raised letters. Thicker material than a hobby laser cuts well. Aluminium, brass and plastics that lasers mark or cannot cut. It produces dust and chips rather than smoke, and it is noisy.
What each costs to run
A laser uses little beyond electricity, replacement lenses and air assist parts. A router uses end mills, which wear and break, plus clamps and dust extraction. Both need materials suited to them.
How to choose
List the first projects. Mostly engraved or cut from thin sheet: a laser. Mostly carved, thick or metal: a router. Many workshops end up with both, and the order depends on which list is longer. The safety requirements of each — eye protection and ventilation for the laser, guarding and dust control for the router — come from each maker’s manual.
Questions makers ask before buying
Can a CNC router engrave like a laser?
It can engrave with V-bits and small end mills, cutting a groove rather than burning a mark. The result has real depth, but fine photographic engraving is laser territory.
Is a laser engraver quieter than a CNC router?
A laser, usually, though its fans and extraction make noise. A spindle cutting wood or aluminium is loud and throws chips, which is why routers are often enclosed.
