Should my first 3D printer be a filament or a resin printer?

The two processes share a name and very little else, so the choice comes down to what will be printed and where the machine will live.

What each process is good at

A filament printer (FDM) melts a plastic thread and lays it down line by line. It handles brackets, enclosures, tool holders, cosplay pieces and anything that has to be strong or large, and its visible layer lines are the price of that. A resin printer cures a liquid with light, a whole layer at a time, and it reproduces fine surface detail — miniatures, jewellery patterns, dental models — that a nozzle cannot.

What each one asks of the room

Filament printing needs a flat surface and some ventilation for the plastics that give off fumes. Resin printing needs more: nitrile gloves, a place to wash parts, a curing light or station, and a routine for the washing liquid and the empty bottles, because uncured resin is an irritant. The maker’s safety data sheet says what the resin requires, and that sheet is the one to follow.

What each one costs to run

A spool of filament is a single consumable. Resin printing adds release films, washing liquid and a curing step to the resin itself. Neither list is long, but the second is longer, and it is the list people forget when comparing machine prices.

A practical way to decide

Write down the first ten things the printer should make. If most of them are functional parts larger than a matchbox, a filament printer is the answer. If most are small and decorative, and there is a room where resin can be handled properly, a resin printer earns its extra steps.

Questions makers ask before buying

Is a resin printer harder to use than a filament printer?

The printing itself is not harder, but everything around it is more involved: gloves, a wash in alcohol or water, a separate curing step, a dedicated space and care with the waste liquid. A filament print is usable as soon as it leaves the bed.

Can one printer do both?

No consumer machine does both processes. They cure or melt material in completely different ways, and a workshop that needs both ends up with two machines.
