It depends on the materials. For PLA an enclosure adds little and can even trap too much heat; for ABS, ASA and other warping filaments it helps a great deal, and it keeps dust, drafts and curious hands away from a hot machine.
Enclosed printers look more finished and cost more, and whether that matters depends on what will be printed.
When an enclosure changes results
ABS, ASA and nylon shrink as they cool, and a warm, still space around the part reduces warping and layer splitting. For those materials an enclosure is close to essential. PLA prints well in open air and can soften or clog if the space around it gets too warm, so enclosed printers often open a door or lid for it.
What an enclosure does besides temperature
It keeps dust off the plate, keeps drafts from one side of a room from cooling the part unevenly, reduces noise a little and keeps hands and pets away from a moving, heated machine.
What it does not do by itself
A box does not clean the air. If fumes are a concern, the enclosure needs an exhaust or a filter, and the maker says which one it has. It also does not make an unattended printer safe; the maker’s instructions on supervision still apply.
Choosing on this point
If the plan is PLA and PETG, an open printer is enough and an enclosure can come later. If ABS or ASA parts are on the list, an enclosed printer, or an open one with a well-fitting enclosure from the start, saves a lot of failed prints.
Questions makers ask before buying
Can an enclosure be added later?
Yes. Tents, cabinets and panel kits are sold for many open-frame printers, sized by their inner dimensions. They are a later purchase that only a change of material usually makes necessary.
Does an enclosure remove fumes?
Only if it is connected to an exhaust or a filter. A closed box contains fumes; it does not remove them, and the enclosure maker describes any filtration it provides.
