Yes: engraving and cutting burn material, and the smoke and fumes have to go somewhere. Laser makers describe the extraction, filtration or venting their machines need, and the material’s own safety information says what burning it releases; both apply every time the laser runs.
A laser engraver is a controlled fire, and the smoke it makes is the part of home laser work most often underestimated.
What the laser produces
Burning wood, leather, card or acrylic releases smoke, fine particles and gases, and the mix depends on the material. The laser maker’s manual describes the ventilation the machine needs, and the material supplier’s information describes what the material releases when heated.
The usual arrangements
Venting outdoors through a duct and fan, often from an enclosure around the laser. A fume extractor with filters, where venting is not possible, chosen by its airflow and filter stages as its maker publishes them. An enclosed machine with a built-in exhaust port, which still needs a duct or a filter unit connected to it. Which of these a setup needs is described by the maker, and this site does not describe any arrangement as making a room safe.
Materials to check first
Makers publish lists of materials to avoid, and chlorinated plastics such as PVC are on them. Coated, painted or unknown materials are worth identifying before they go under the beam.
The rest of the safety picture
Ventilation is one part. Eye protection marked for the laser’s wavelength, a fire-resistant surface, never leaving the laser running unattended and keeping an extinguisher nearby are the other parts that makers commonly list. The machine’s manual and its laser class marking are the authorities for each of them.

Is an enclosure enough on its own?
An enclosure contains light and smoke, but the smoke still has to be extracted or filtered. Makers of enclosed machines describe the exhaust or filter the enclosure connects to.
Are some materials unsuitable for laser engraving?
Yes. Laser makers publish lists of materials not to process, and PVC and other chlorine-containing plastics appear on those lists because of the gases they release.
