ABS is the classic heat-resistant filament, and it is the one whose fumes most often decide where a printer can go.

What ABS releases

Heating ABS releases a noticeable smell and airborne emissions. Filament makers describe this in their safety data sheets, and those sheets are the reference for the precautions to take.

The usual arrangements

Ventilation in the room, following the filament maker’s advice. An enclosure with an exhaust that ducts air outside. An enclosure with filtration, where the maker describes the filter type. Keeping the printer out of living and sleeping areas while printing.

Why enclosures help twice

ABS also warps, and a warm, still enclosure improves prints. Connected to an exhaust or filter, the same enclosure deals with fumes. The enclosure maker’s description of its ventilation and filtration says which of those it does.

Smoothing with acetone

ABS can be smoothed with acetone vapour, a process with its own flammability and ventilation hazards described by acetone suppliers. It is a separate decision from printing ABS at all.

ASA also releases fumes while printing, and its makers give similar ventilation advice. It is chosen mainly for its better resistance to sunlight.

Does an enclosure solve the smell?

An enclosure contains fumes; an exhaust duct or a filter removes them. The enclosure maker states which it provides, and a sealed box alone only holds the fumes in.
