Will any 1.75 mm filament work in my 3D printer?

The diameter

Printers take 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm filament, the two conventions in use. The printer maker publishes which. Within that diameter, a tighter published tolerance gives more even extrusion.

The temperatures

Each material has a nozzle and bed temperature range printed by its maker. A hotend limited near the bottom of a range — for example one with a PTFE liner reaching into the hot zone — prints that material poorly or not at all. The printer’s maximum temperatures are published beside it.

The nozzle

Abrasive filaments filled with carbon, glass, glow pigment or metal wear brass nozzles quickly, and their makers usually call for a hardened nozzle.

The spool and feeder

Printers with a built-in holder or an automatic material system accept certain spool widths, hub diameters and sometimes certain spool materials. A spool that does not sit or turn properly causes failures that look like extrusion problems.

A quick compatibility check

Diameter matches; the material’s temperatures sit inside the printer’s limits; the nozzle suits abrasive fillers if there are any; the spool fits the holder or feeder. If all four are true, the spool should print with a profile tuned for it.

What happens with 2.85 mm filament in a 1.75 mm printer?

It does not fit. The two diameters are separate standards, and a printer is built for one of them.

Do cardboard spools cause problems?

Some automatic material systems and holders feed cardboard spools poorly, and their makers publish advice or adapter rings. The spool width and hub size matter there as much as the filament.
