Most often because the material is not the same distance from the laser everywhere: a warped sheet, a bed that is not level with the gantry, or a focus set in one corner. Smoke drifting across the work and dirty optics can add to it.
An engraving that fades from one side to the other is almost always a focus problem, and focus depends on distance.
Check the material first
Warped sheets rise in the middle or at the edges, and a laser focused at one height engraves lighter where the surface is higher or lower. Holding the sheet flat with hold-down pins or weights outside the design often fixes it.
Check the bed and gantry
On open-frame lasers, the frame can sit unevenly on the table, and the bed or honeycomb may not be parallel to the gantry. Measuring the focus distance at each corner with the maker’s focusing tool shows the difference.
Check the focus method
A laser focused in one corner and engraving across a large area magnifies any unevenness. Focusing near the centre of the design, or using an autofocus feature where the machine has one, gives a better average.
Check smoke and optics
Smoke drifting across the work absorbs part of the beam, which is one reason air assist and extraction matter. A dirty lens or window reduces power evenly but can make other problems more visible; the maker’s cleaning instructions apply.
Check speed at the edges
Some machines slow down near the ends of each line, which darkens the edges. Overscan settings in the laser software address that.

How do I check whether the bed is level?
Measure the focus distance at each corner of the working area with the focusing tool or gauge the maker provides. Differences show which corner is high or low.
Can warped wood be engraved evenly?
Holding it flat with pins, magnets or weights outside the engraving area usually helps. Badly warped sheets are better replaced.
